Nauplion, Greece

Imagine the light, the clear Greek light that turns to glorious gold each evening. Imagine wandering in the footsteps of some of the great heroes of antiquity—Perseus, Heracles, Agamemnon. For two and a half weeks, Nauplion, a delightful port town on the Gulf of Argos, considered the loveliest in the Peloponnese, will be our home. Here your studies will focus on both the ancient and contemporary cultures of Greece through readings, fieldtrips, fieldwork research, drama, and creative and academic writing.

We will visit such inspiring nearby archeological sites as Mycenae, Argos, Epidauros, Nemea and Corinth and also travel across the rugged mountains of Arcadia, the haunts of Artemis and Pan, to Olympia where the Olympic games began. On our second weekend you will have the chance to sail to the radiant islands of Hydra and Spetses.

The great metropolis of Athens will be home for our final four days. Classes will be held right in the ancient agora where Socrates taught and in the theater of Dionysus at the foot of the Acropolis where the great dramatists Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides first performed their immortal works. We will take in the great Archeological Museum, historic Byzantine sites, the bustling markets of Monastiraki and Plaka and the vibrant student quarters.

Come and experience the incredible warmth and passion of Greek life, the awe-inspiring archaeological monuments, the beauty and tranquility of the Aegean Sea and the pulse of a great modern city!
