Country Director: W. Alan Hodson
Accompanying Faculty: Tom Kosiba
Course Description
This 1000-level elective course is designed to increase knowledge of the language, culture, and ecosystems of Chile. The program features a) first-hand exploration of local ecosystems and people’s interactions with those life support systems, b) hands-on experience working with local people on one or more community service learning projects, and c) guided immersion in Spanish language acquisition. Components include visual journaling, reflection, collaborative learning, group dynamics, and problem based education.
Program Overview
This program is designed to increase knowledge of Chile through language learning, readings, lectures, and first-hand experience with local people and ecosystems. Students will record and reflect on their learning experiences through a "visual journal" process. They will share these experiences through writing, discussion and group processing activities. The program will conclude with a final presentation at Landmark.
Students will be based in Pucon, at the foot of Volcano Villarrica, within site of the Andes Mountains. Pucon is near Temuco in the Lakes Region of southern Chile. Excursions to spectacular parks, cultural sites, and ecological locations of interest are part of the program.
Cost of program: $pending
- Total cost: $5,250
- Some meals are the student’s responsibility (3-4 days).
- Price does not include individual spending money.
Application Process
The application deadline is October 26, 2007. Preference will be given to students who apply by that date. Thereafter, we will accept qualified applicants on an ongoing basis until the program is filled. Applicants must be in good academic standing, with no current disciplinary sanctions in effect. A recommendations from your advisor is required. Because this is a competitive program with limited space, we encourage you to apply early.
Attention
Pucon and southern Chile are beautiful and exotic places and the program will explore this beauty, but students should be aware that living and working conditions will be very different from a resort vacation. Conditions will be comfortable and safe, but rustic. The service learning project will involve some labor, but nothing a healthy and fit student would have trouble with. Applicants are expected to be in good physical shape. If you have challenges with sleep, rustic living conditions, encountering insects and animals, or vigorous physical activity, or have any questions about the program or Chile, contact the country director BEFORE you apply.
