U.S. Department of Education’s Demonstration Projects to Ensure Students with Disabilities Receive a Quality Higher Education (Demo Disabilities)

The Landmark College Institute for Research and Training (LCIRT) was recently awarded a 3-year grant from the Department of Education’s Demonstration Projects to Ensure Students with Disabilities Receive a Quality Higher Education grant program in the amount of $1,029,096 to conduct A Needs-Based Best Practices Professional Development Program for Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities in the Community College Setting. LCIRT will partner with 5 large community college systems in Vermont, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Nevada and conduct comprehensive needs assessments at each college to assess their ability to serve students with learning disabilities (LD) and implement a customized online LD professional development program at each partner college. By creating a mechanism to assess organizational systems in light of best practices in the field, and by establishing a substantial new source of free professional development and training for community college educators, this demonstration project promises to have a significant impact on practices in the field, and on the capabilities and capacity of community colleges around the nation to more effectively serve students with LD. The U.S. Department of Education is financing 90% of total project costs ($1,029,096) and Landmark College is financing 10% of total project costs ($108,606).
