New Landmark College Seal and Logo Unveiled at 20th Anniversary Celebration

About the College’s New Seal and Logo

New Landmark College Seal

Landmark College has always been an innovative and progressive institution. We have constantly evolved to provide great service to our students who struggle with learning disabilities and AD/HD and to help guide them to new levels of success in their academic pursuits and personal lives.

Last fall, in anticipation of Landmark’s 20th Anniversary in August 2005, it was decided this milestone marked an ideal opportunity to develop an official college seal for Landmark that would clearly symbolize its unique mission. At most institutions of higher education, such seals employ symbols of medieval heraldry. In creating the seal for Landmark, however, our goals was to marry the serious intent of a college seal with a more contemporary design that better represented Landmark’s youthful history and outlook.

It was also determined that the actual shield within the seal serve as the central graphic symbol of a new Landmark College logo. In recent years, as Landmark broadened its presence in the educational sector, it became increasing clear that our original lighthouse logo was creating confusion among the College’s key audiences. For example, several other institutions with missions similar to Landmark’s also employ a lighthouse in their logo — and the lighthouse symbol led many people to believe that Landmark was closely located near the sea or ocean.

The new seal can be interpreted on both figurative and literal levels. The path in the center of the seal can be viewed as each student’s own personal road to enlightenment — the ”different path” that Landmark students take on their way to the top. Alternately, it can be seen as a geographic symbol of Landmark’s scenic Vermont setting, evoking the winding path of the Connecticut River, framed by the beautiful mountains of our region.

At the end of the path lies the horizon — graduation — and above it shines a triumphant sun. The horizon represents the goal each individual strives to reach, while the sunburst pays tribute to the beams of light featured in Landmark’s former lighthouse symbol, which continue on in the rays of the sun. Its rays are a symbol of hope and self-realization. Our new seal conveys our hope for a bright future for each of our graduates: May they continue over the horizon for a lifetime journey of enlightenment, triumph and progress.

Taken as a whole, we believe our new seal is a fitting metaphor for the spirit of a Landmark education. That outlook also is clearly expressed in the heraldic motto we have adopted as part of the new seal: Pret accomplirReady to Accomplish. Below the motto we have added our year we first opened our doors to serve students: 1985
