In June 2005, LCIRT was awarded a one year $5,000 grant from the National Science Foundation-funded Eastern Alliance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at the University of Southern Maine to establish “A Universal Design Lab to Promote Usability and Accessibility in STEM Content for Students with Learning Disabilities.” The lab facilities will enable students, faculty, and staff to conduct research related to the accessibility, usability, and effectiveness of assistive technologies, digital content, and online designs of teaching materials. Initial research activities will focus on developing an understanding of how students use technologies and digital media to learn STEM content, and how the design of such media can enhance student learning. Other lab research will be aimed at developing a better understanding of how information design influences learning, and how students use assistive technologies to interact with digital media across all domains.
